Florida’s Legislative session will reconvene on March 2 through April 30, 2021. This year’s focus for
environmental topics include clean energy, land conservation, population growth, water quality and
quantity, plus budget issues, to name just a few.
Based on several reports, approximately 900 people are moving to Florida every day. This volume of
population growth impacts every facet of our economy, but most importantly: our water.
Our water is a basic resource and is vital to Florida’s population, tourism, and agriculture – essentially
every person, business, and organization in Florida depends on a clean, reliable water supply. With an
increasing population, the priority of current and future water quality and quantity for the residents of
Florida should be magnified at this year’s session.
Facing an approximate $5.4 billion revenue deficit over the next two years, the State of Florida’s budget
for conservation, cleanup, and restoration of our water systems will likely suffer. However, even with
reduced revenues due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our water should remain a top priority in Tallahassee.
From the beaches to the springs and everything underneath, it’s up to our public officials to protect our
most valuable resource.
ERMI is dedicated to Florida’s water. We are involved in many environmental industry association
activities designed to emphasize the importance of growth management and various water quality
initiatives, including funding for groundwater cleanup programs. We will remain up to date with
