ERMI’s Steve Hilfiker contributed an article to the latest issue of Suite Life magazine. For more than 30 years, this bimonthly publication has covered the commercial real estate and development scene in Southwest Florida—providing an ideal forum for Steve’s perspective on the region’s growth.
In his article, “Easing Redevelopment for Florida’s Future,” Steve spotlights the importance of urban redevelopment projects, and points out how investors can help make those projects successful by strategically managing environmental risks.
He also encourages those in the real estate industry to participate in legislative discussions to help bring about improved regulatory procedures that can expedite safe development. Landowners and developers often want fast approvals for urban redevelopment projects. But unfortunately, on some sites, the processes used by the FDEP to gauge the viability of a proposed closure strategy can delay projects if not managed properly.
Steve recommends some minor policy adjustments to help projects keep pace with population growth, while still protecting human health and the environment.
